Annual Call Day Post
Today is Call Day at my Alma Mater. Here is my classic post written to all those receiving their call into The Office of the Holy Ministry. *** You have arrived at the end of your training. Well done. We are proud … Continue reading
Quote of the Day
From Luther’s classic “How to Meditate on the Passion of Christ”. What use is it to you that God is God, if He is not God for you? Which is to say, it doesn’t matter how big and impressive and … Continue reading
Easter Sermon
He is Risen! (He is Risen Indeed!) Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ Is Arisen, from the graves dark prison. Now let our joy rise full and free; Christ our comfort true will be. Alleluia! The women go to the tomb to anoint Jesus … Continue reading
Good Friday Tenebrae
In which I pretty much ignore the whole “Tenebrae=Darkness” motif, and go with the whole “Jesus was in control the whole time” thing. One thing must be understood about the events of Good Friday: Nothing occurred on that day that … Continue reading
Sermon for Maundy Thursday
Love one another. Love is the fulfillment of the law. Jesus loved his own who were in the world, and loved them to the end. What does this mean? Jesus fulfilled the law. He showed us what perfect love is. … Continue reading
Sermon for Holy Week Wednesday
St. Matthew and St. Mark’s account of the crucifixion are almost identical. Jesus says the same words from the cross, you have the same cast of characters, they are almost but not quite word for word replicas of each other. … Continue reading
The Smell of Money and “Jesus Wife”
I may be a country parson, but I’m a city boy. It shows. I don’t know one seed from another. I wouldn’t know what to feed livestock; I can’t help with calving, lambing, or pigleting(?). When I hunt, the only … Continue reading
Holy Week Tuesday Sermon
Once again, we see the contradiction. Paul says that Jesus made the good confession before Pilate. But Jesus says only two words. When Pilate asks “Are you the king of the Jews”, Jesus answers “su legeis” “You say”. It is … Continue reading
Holy Week Monday Sermon
We heard the reading of the Passion from Saint Matthew Yesterday, and, Tomorrow, Wednesday and Friday we hear from Saint Mark, Luke and John. Today we hear and consider the events of Holy Week between Sunday and Wednesday. The anointing … Continue reading
Sermon For Palm/Passion/Confirmation Sunday
No day has as many themes crammed into them as Palm Sunday does. We start with the palms. The little children processing into the church. After that we hear the passion account – abbreviated today, because we also get to … Continue reading
