The release date is set. After many delays, Catechetics will be released on March 1! Cost will be $36 for paperback, and $45 for hardcover. Because Kindle hates footnotes, and I have many, many footnotes, it will only be available in print editions. But that’s ok. Books are better when you can grab them and turn pages made of real paper.
Between now and the first, I’ll be posting some snippets to Catechetics to whet the appetite. But today, I’m in a thoughtful mood.
Looking back at the archives, I found 10 pages of notes from 2008. I’ve been at it more than a decade. I had no idea it would take this long. I had no idea it had taken this long. When I released Teach These Things in 2014, I had an ad on the back page saying that Catechetics was coming in 2015. I was about 2/3 done with the manuscript at that point, so it sounded like a reasonable guess. (Morgan Freeman voice: It was not a reasonable guess). The first draft was not ready until 2016. Many delays along the way gave me time to work on some other projects: I edited a book for an old professor, wrote a small volume on apologetics, delivered a paper to my district pastor’s conference on fellowship, and updated Teach These Things with a second edition.
Studying and writing this book has changed me a lot. I’m a better pastor for it. My preaching is better. My ability to teach has improved. I’ve given a lot of thought to the entire life and work of the predigtamt. It’s been my continuing education for a decade, and it’s been a worthwhile one. I look forward to sharing those insights with you, and soon, I will.
I would say I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself now, but that’s not true. A tri-point parish keeps me hopping these days, and I have one major and one minor writing project already in the hopper, if in the infant stages. But Catechetics is finished, and on March 1 you can place your orders.
